ECE Computer and Technology Services
Network File Storage
All ECE students and staff have storage space on the ECE Fileserver Cluster. Beginning October 1, 2007, Computer and Technology Services (CTS) will begin enforcing 1 GB quotas on all student home directories. Students with directories exceeding 1 GB will be able to access their current files, but will not be able to save any additional files until their directory size drops below 1 GB.Students or TAs requiring additional storage space for their coursework can email ece-help@uiuc.edu or visit Everitt Lab 328 to request additional space.
Accessing Your Network Storage Within Everitt Lab
From within Instructional Labs in Everitt Lab (note that this excludes the EWS lab), your storage space (home directory) is attached to the w: drive as well as My Documents. Items stored on the Desktop in any lab are saved to w:\Desktop. Internet Explorer Favorites are stored at w:\Favorites.
Accessing Your Network Storage Using Windows Networking
You may connect directly to your network share using the Windows Networking path \\ece-serv-05.ece.uiuc.edu\NetID. You can do this from any Windows 2000 or XP machine from anywhere in the world. If connecting from off campus, you will need to first connect to either the UIUCnet VPN system or the ECE VPN system.
Accessing Your Network Storage Using SFTP
Alternatively, you can connect using SFTP to ece-serv-05.ece.uiuc.edu. You can download SFTP software for different operating systems from the CITES Remote Computing page. Please note that SSH shell access is NOT allowed.
Username and Password
If you are prompted for a username and password, you will use your University NetID and Active Directory password. If you are connecting from off campus, you may need to type "uiuc\username" (without the quotes, replacing "username" with your NetID) in the username field.
Network Storage Service
ECE faculty members who need storage space for ECE courses they are teaching may follow the above Network File Storage instructions. However, faculty members or researchers in ECE, Bioengineering, or the Micro and Nanotechnology Lab who need storage space for research-related material need to use the Network Storage Service, which provides network-available disk space on the ECE Department's highly redundant, high performance fileserver. The Network Storage Service:
- Is available to faculty, staff, graduate researchers, and other valid organizations in ECE, Bioengineering, and the Micro and Nanotechnology Lab
- Is charged at a cost per gigabye per year, calculated on an average daily balance basis, depending on what services are provided
- Costs $2 per gigabyte per year for storage service only, with no backups
- Costs $3 per gigabyte per year for backup service only, which includes daily backups with a 21 day retention period
- Costs $5 per gigabyte per year for both storage and backup service
Additional details (.doc) describe the supported hours and cost structure.
