E. A Reid Fellowship Awards

At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign - Established 1983

Ernest A. Reid
Ernest A. Reid
Ernest A. Reid received his BS degree in 1914, MS degree in 1915, and the professional degree of Electrical Engineering in 1927, all from UIUC. He taught at the University of Minnesota from 1915 to 1917. In 1917 he returned to the University of Illinois as an instructor and later became a full professor in 1946.

He was faculty advisor to both Eta Kappa Nu and the student branch of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. He worked closely with the students in supervising the Electrical Show, the success of which ultimately resulted in the development of the Engineering Open House as a collegewide activity.

He retired in 1956, but continued to serve the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering by developing a supervision and training procedure for guiding the new teaching assistants. He visited their classes and then counseled with them on how to improve their techniques.

Professor Reid died December 15, 1965.

Description:

In 1983 Mrs. Nell W. Reid established the Ernest A. Reid Fellowship Award in Honor of her husband who taught in our department from 1917 to 1956. The fund was set up to encourage graduate students pursuing the Ph.D. to consider an academic career. It is the donor's desire that "deserving...students interested in pursuing a course of study resulting in teaching of electrical engineering" be given preference.

Application Packet:

  1. Student vita or dossier specifying previous education, work experience, research experience, publications, presentations and relevant service.
  2. Essay of approximately one page by the student nominee. The essay should describe the student's career goals, how these goals will impact engineering education, and how the student's Ph.D. program will help accomplish those goals.
  3. Two letters of recommendation should address the student's demonstrated contributions and/or potential for making significant contributions to engineering education, research and service. In particular, the letters should address how the fellowship will help the student meet his/her career goals.

Selection Criteria:

  1. You must be a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, enrolled in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  2. Academic performance as demonstrated by (but not restricted to) coursework and grades, recommendations, and previous recognition (awards).
  3. Demonstrated interest in engineering education, including teaching experience in the classroom, laboratory or as a tutor; extracurricular teaching, such as demonstrations to high schools, scout troops or other outreach; service to the community which promotes technical awareness; and research or other outreach activities promoting engineering education.
  4. Research accomplishments, ability or potential as evidenced by publications, presentations, letter of recommendation, and the student's essay.
  5. Assessment of the student's commitment to and potential for contributing to engineering education based on the student's essay, letters of recommendation, and previous performance.

Selection Process:

Applications for the fellowship may be submitted online beginning in January of each year. The Department fellowship committee reviews the applications and selects the recipient.

Award:

The award carries a stipend of $5000, which is paid over the academic year. The recipient is recognized at the annual ECE Faculty Student Awards banquet in the spring.
