Undergraduate Curriculum
in Computer or Electrical Engineering

Guidelines for Transition to the New ECE Curricula

  • Students who started College before fall 2006 have the choice between the *old* ECE curricula, and the *new* ECE curricula. This applies to students who are currently in ECE or in another Engineering Department/College at UIUC, or are in another school (transferring to UIUC).
  • Late juniors to seniors are not encouraged to transition to the new curricula as it will entail taking extra classes, and likely postpone graduation by one semester.
  • Students who start College on or after fall 2006 will not be able to choose and must follow the *new* curriculum requirements.
  • Both curricula are detailed in the "Current Undergraduates" section.

Main differences are summarized below:

Guidelines for transitioning to the new curricula

New Requirement

You have taken the class below before fa’06.

(If you take the class after fa’06, then it will NOT apply to you: you must take the new requirement, except for Math 220)

Situation

Math 221 (4 hrs)

Math 220

Counts! even after fa’06! (extra 1 hour will count as free elective)

Math 231 (3 hrs)

Math 230

Counts! (same class, new number)

Math 241 (4 hrs)

Math 243
Math 242

Counts! (same class, new number)
Take Math 487 (extra hours will count in technical electives)

Math 286 (4 hrs)

Math 285 (formerly 385)

Take Math 415, or better Math 487
(extra hours will count in technical electives)

ECE 190 (4 hrs)

CS 125

Counts! (but CompE students will have a hard time in the required new ECE 391).
See notes from Prof. Lumetta

ECE 391 (3 hrs)

ECE 390

Counts!

ECE 313 or Stat 410 (3 hrs)

Stat 400

Take Stat 410 or ECE 313
(Stat 400 will count as free elective)

EE: 36 hours of technical electives (in old it is 22+15) from a departmentally approved list.

A Basic Science in the old list.
An Engineering Science in the old list.
ECE 390.

CompE: 23 hours of technical electives (in old it is 21). Must take one Non-ECE, Non-CS class. All other hours must be ECE/CS from a departmentally approved list.

A Basic Science in the old list.

ECE 390.

Counts! (as the Non-ECE/Non-CS)

The "Departmentally Approved list of Technical Electives" is the same for Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering.
